LISTEN: Kristin Kontrol Releases New Song “X-Communicate”

Kristin Kontrol, also known as Dee Dee, the lead singer of the American indie rock band Dum Dum Girls, has just released the title track off her new album, entitled “X-Communicate.” It is a catchy and danceable song, and Kristin Kontrol’s voice soars and glows over the track. The song is a bit of a departure from her work in Dum Dum Girls, showing strong influences of 80s dance pop.

This will be Kristin Kontrol’s debut solo record, and as she described earlier this year, she aims to focus on more electronic, synth-pop sound. Indeed, the song certainly shows influences from synth-pop legends such as New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and Depeche Mode. As Brooklyn Vegan notes, Kurt Feldman of Ice Choir helped on the record and his electropop predilections also served as an influence.

Though this is Kristin Kontrol’s debut album, she is no stranger to working on music outside of Dum Dum Girls. Just last May, she released “Is There Any Other One?” under the name HUNI, while Dum Dum Girls were on hiatus. The song takes on a more R&B, chillwave sound, showing the first inklings of Kristen Kontrol’s new work.

Kristin Kontrol, also known by her real name, Kristin Welchez has worked on various music projects. She started off as the singer and drummer for the San Diego-based trio, Grand Ole Party, which formed in 2006. In 2008, Welchez formed the indie-rock band Dum Dum Girls, for which she is most known for. The band has reached critical success and has worked with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Crocodiles. The band last released a record in 2014, entitled Too True, but Welchez has worked on other projects in the meantime as well.

Be sure to catch her at SXSW this year, and don’t forget to grab her album, “X-Communicate” when it comes out this year on May 27 via Sub Pop records. Take a listen to the song below.
