The legendary Iggy Pop has just released a new track from his upcoming album, Post Pop Depression. The song is titled “Sunday,” and features a catchy riff along with a classic rock feel that builds even more anticipation.
It was announced in January that the punk rock staple would be collaborating with Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme to record Post Pop Depression. The duo have since released several songs from the album, including “Break Into Your Heart” and “Gardenia.” However, this new track may just be the most interesting yet. It features a slick and spunky guitar lick, sleek vocals and shows Pop exploring his sound in a complex and creative way.
“Sunday” is certainly a bit mellow compared to Pop’s previous work, and features almost a hint of disco throughout the track. This may lead one to wonder if his most die-hard of fans will appreciate the blending of genres. Personally, I would say yes. While the track is definitely different, it features just enough “classic” Iggy Pop to be recognizable, while also serving as a breath of fresh air. It just shows that a true masterpiece is born when multiple brilliant minds come together.
In addition to Pop and Homme, the band includes Dead Weather’s Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders. The touring band will also feature Matt Sweeny and Queens of the Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen. The group has announced that they will also go on tour throughout the United States and Europe to promote the new album. The tour will begin on March 28th in Seattle, Washington and end on May 15th in Paris, France. Pop will also be making a handful of appearances at festivals, including SXSW, Northside Festival, Main Square and Isle of Wight.
Post Pop Depression will be released on March 18 via Loma Vista.
