Last night was the 26th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC, and several artists performed in honor of it, including Iggy Pop, who paid a tribute to David Bowie. Their performance began with spoken word performances of “I Talked to a Smart Guy” and “Mom and Dad are Gone.” Afterwards, Iggy Pop closed out the night with a cover of David Bowie’s “The Jean Genie”, then performed the song “Tonight”, joined by Sharon Jones for a duet. To close out the evening, all of the concert performers joined them onstage to finish the song. Check out the finale below.
Back in 1987, the Dalai Lama during inauguration expressed a desire for a long-term cultural institution so that Tibetan civilization and culture would survive. In response, Tibet House US was founded, part of a worldwide network of Tibetan institutions that are committed to preserving Tibetan culture. The proceeds from the benefit concert go to support the work of Tibet House US to help them protect and preserve the culture. Their annual benefit concert is one of the longest-running and most acclaimed live cultural events in NYC. Classical American composer Philip Glass, considered one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century, served as curator and artistic director for the concert.
Iggy Pop, vocalist of the protopunk band The Stooges, has been around the music industry since 1960. The Stooges, despite their break from 1974-2003, have put out five studio albums in their career and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. Their most recent album, Ready to Die, was released back in 2013 and received generally favorable reviews. Now, Iggy Pop has announced that he is collaborating with American rock musician Josh Homme on new album called Post Pop Depression, which will be released on March 18th. Last month, Iggy Pop released the track “Break Into Your Heart” from the upcoming album.
