We’ve seen a hint of Johnny Depp’s musicality throughout his acting career, but the man we knew as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street in “Sweeney Todd” is nothing like the rock’n’roll artist we saw on stage at the Grammy Awards Monday night. As a member of Hollywood Vampires — a supergroup comprised of Alice Cooper, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Paul McCartney for starters (a total of 19 legends) — Depp showed off the guitar skills he’s been hiding from us all these years, making fans real excited for the band’s 2016 tour.
Hollywood Vampires released their self-titled album last September, though Cooper told Rolling Stone another one is in the works. In the meantime, their track “As Bad As I Am” that was performed at the Grammys is available for streaming on iTunes and Amazon.
The band has confirmed three shows this year: Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York on May 24, Rock in Rio Festival in Lisbon, Portugal on May 27, and Rock Fest in Cadott, Wisconsin this July. As for the sparse tour dates, that one’s easy to explain: Ain’t no famous musical legend got time for that.
Cooper, who originally started the group as a celebrity drinking club in the 70s, explained to Rolling Stone, “…you have Johnny’s movie schedule; you’ve got Aerosmith; you’ve got Guns N’ Roses and you’ve got me! It’s five entities going in five different directions. To get those guys all at one time when we’re not working is really unique. So everybody looks at their calendar, and you have to find that two weeks where everybody’s off.”
