Boris, the Tokyo-based drone metal band, have announced their North American tour dates for this spring in the hype of their collaboration project, Gensho, which is due for release March 18. Starting at Levitation Fest in Austin, Texas on April 29, the band will perform eight shows in eight days, ending at The Glass House in Pomona, California on May 7.
The experimental sludgegaze musicians Wata, Atsuo and Takeshi have created sonic madness as Boris for over 25 years, but they are hardly finished yet. Gensho — the Japanese word for “phenomenon” — is a collaborative project of Boris and Japanese noise musician Masami Akita, who goes by the stage name Merzbow. Gensho features over 150 minutes of music divided into four LPs or two CDs. However, Gensho is a synchronous project; the four parts are meant to be listened to all at once.
Like much modern art, Boris and Merzbow’s music is intentionally shocking and difficult to comprehend at it’s first take, clearly emphasizing the abstraction of sound over traditional melody and lyrics. Now there’s a chance to experience Boris live on their spring tour. Tickets for the U.S. tour are not yet on sale, though Gensho is available for preorder through Relapse Records.
