When musicians create defining music at such a young age, I start to question my life choices. Marcel Everett, known by his stage name XXYYXX, is only 20 years old and producing music from remixes of Usher to his own trippy, glitchy tunes. Everett is influenced by Shlohmo and Disclosure and is said to have a similar style to James Blake, the Weeknd, and Clams Casino. Everett’s music can fit under the umbrella of future garage and experimental music. Everett’s music is always changing. In his debut album Still Sound, he creates a low-fi, chill-out record and then with his third album Mystify transforms electronic meets improv jazz and obscure hip-hop.
I find it laughable that the artist is not even old even to get into his own show if he were to be an audience member. The age to get in is 21 and over and this musical genius a year short. And what’s even crazier is that Everett started making music around as XXYYXX around age 15. Still Sound was released in 2011, so do the math. I don’t think it’d be exaggerated to call Everett one of the most intelligent electronic musicians. For his age, he has built quite a career, having his song released on Grand Theft Auto V and receiving recognition from music media outlets all over the internet.
Don’t miss out on this legend perform an unforgettable set at the Independent. Listen below to his newest song Red. I can’t help but dance to this track. I hope you feel the same about his music. Get tickets ASAP because I wouldn’t be surprised if XXYYXX sells out.
