Ronald McDonald is largely unsettling on his own, but watching the clowned figure perform spoofed Black Sabbath songs is a whole new experience — one you’ve probably never thought to prepare for. But that is the entity of Mac Sabbath, who bides in the underground genre of “Drive Thru Metal.” With Mac, you get what you order: cheesy fast food lyrics to the tune of iconic metal songs. And now, like McDonald’s, the cover band will be available all across the U.S. as they embark on their Rock-Sham-Shake tour.
With content that is hilariously disturbing and about as indigestable as a Happy Meal, Mac Sabbath’s best known hit is “Frying Pan,” otherwise known as “Iron Man,” with satirically prosaic lyrics such as “Everybody wants it, turning the grease into gold/ excluding the veggies, trimming the cheese of mold.” Frontman Robert Osbourne sings the parodies with his post-apocalyptic, fast food-themed bandmates — all talented musicians masked by the absurdity of fried commodities. Other hits include “Pair-a-buns” (originally “Paranoid”), “Sweet Beef” (“Sweet Leaf”), and “Chicken of the Slaves” (“Children of the Grave”).
Mac Sabbath will perform March 3 in Dallas, Texas — their first of over 30 shows that they have planned on their tour, which ends in Boise, Idaho on June 19. Other news for the band is that they recently made a Tumblr, where the fandom runs wild with Mac Sabbath tribute art. Whether or not Mac Sabbath’s parodies are mere farce or saturated in some deeper social commentary, the near 30,000 likes on their Facebook page is a sign that plenty of people out there are lovin’ it.
