Canadian musician and producer Devin Townsend has announced plans to begin recording his next new album on March 27. The album will be released under the Devin Townsend Project moniker and is tentatively titled Transcendence.
The forthcoming album will serve as the followup to 2014’s double-album Z2. As reported by Blabbermouth, Townsend described the writing process for his new LP as follows: “Because ‘Z2’ happened amidst the crowdfunding, amidst touring and just lots of shit, it was really a challenging and tiring experience. So I’ve tried to spend this year really putting the pieces together. So now that we are working on a new DTP record, the process will be more streamlined, more efficient and more fulfilling.”
While Townsend is known for his heavy metal music, he also occasionally incorporates elements of electronic and progressive rock music in his work. For his new album, he is unsure what form the music will take, though he describes the theme as “getting over it: getting over yourself, getting over… all that stuff. And I’m not saying that I am. But the point of it is, that seems to be the next step.”
Townsend has been less active than usual since finishing his Z2 tour in early 2015, instead focusing on writing new music and recharging his creative batteries. While he originally stated he was planning a year long hiatus following the tour, he later clarified that he just wanted to be careful about overcommitting himself.
