Marking their ten-year anniversary as a band, The Coathangers announced that they will be releasing their fifth studio LP titled Nosebleed Weekend. The album is set to be released on April 16th 2016 through the Seattle based indie label Suicide Squeeze, and to help spread the word the band has chosen to release sneak peak of the album by sharing the track “Make it Right” for fans to preview. The trio composed of Julia Kugel (guitar/vocal), Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) and Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals) will most likely follow the album release the same way they followed their previous ones with a large tour that will take them around the country.
Formed in 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia, the trio hit the alternative rock scene with an incredible force. Debuting their first self-titled album The Coathangers through Rob’s House Records, but after recording a few singles in the following years the band decided that it was time they changed their label, In 2009 the band chose to sign with Suicide Squeeze Records where they have recorded three additional full length albums, including their recent most commercially successful and critically acclaimed album Suck my Shirt, and still remain on the label to this day.
Following their recent album was a tour in which they accompanied fellow Atlanta based band The Black Lips and The Growlers on a long 18 month tour that took them through 2014, where the trio also managed to headline with appearances at popular festivals like Riot Fest, Burgerama, TBD Fest, Sled Island, Festival d’été de Québec and Capitol Hill Block Party.
Now, with their new album, the group chose to do things a little different in order to spice things up, the band decided that they would not record the album in Atlanta, as they did with the previous studio albums, but instead they recorded in North Hollywood at Valentine Recording studios with Nic Jodoin (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club). The Valentine Recording Studio had not opened its doors since 1979, when acclaimed producer Jimmy Valentine decided to suddenly shutter its doors without explanation. Luckily, everything was left intact since the doors closed, including vintage microphones, a custom MCI soundboard, and a slew of priceless recording equipment for the girls to play with. Kugel excitedly claimed “The Beach Boys and Bing Crosby both recorded there!” (as well as Frank Zappa) showing her thrill in creating the new with the old. “It was an amazing experience, not to mention a ghostly one too. The studio had been custom built by Jimmy Valentine and he was very protective of his passion. It sounds weird, but his spirit was there, checking in on us and fucking with us a bit.”
The Coathangers have already announced live shows in Brooklyn and LA dedicated to the album release date, and intend on adding plenty more tour dates for this year.
