RJD2 is coming out with a new album this year. Dame Fortune, the sixth album by the artist will be available for purchase in March of this year. The new album features songs with guest vocalists Son Little (Aaron Livingston) and frequent collaborator Phonte. “Peace of What” is the newest single released from the new album written by RJD2 and its influences are primarily drawn from the 1991 single “Peace Is Not the Word to Play” written by Main Source.
Dame Fortune was written in the past year while RJD2 was living in Philly and then returned to his home back in Columbus, Ohio. The new album has almost the same concept and composition as the artists first album Deadringer, which was his breakthrough album when he became a hip-hop musician.
“Living in Philly provided a context for a lot of soul music that I had liked,” RJD2 says about Philly life and his album Dame Fortune,”I didn’t have any cultural context for this music that I liked—it was just music that I had stumbled across as a beat making nerd. Philly was a place where there were enough people who had the same musical vocabulary that I did, which made the music more than something I had just discovered on my own.”
Dame Fortune is primarily based on the problems the United States is unable to deal with based on the perspective given by RJD2, that there are solutions to things we do not wish to solve: racism, sexism, bigotry, and discrimination because we are choosing not to fix them in the first place.
RJD2 has already announce tour dates for the new album which starts in January of this year in Brooklyn, New York and ends in the month May at Washington DC’s 9:30 Club.
