Bring Me The Horizon toned down the death part of deathcore with an acoustic version of “Drown,” found on their latest album That’s The Spirit. In a studio with violinists and soft sepia lighting, frontman Oliver Sykes and his bandmates remake the metal tune as lyrical ballad.
There’s a large contrast with this music video and the one for the original version of “Drown,” first released as a single in 2014, which features mental patients dressed in white having psychological breakdowns. At one point, drummer Matt Nicholls turns into a werewolf and bites the leg of keyboardist Jordan Fish.
That’s The Spirit is one of five studio albums by Bring Me The Horizon, together since 2004, though the album is comparatively more subdued than the others. Now with a romanticized version of “Drown,” the band seems to be walking the metal-spiked bridge between grindcore and more alt-rock melodies.
Find the acoustic version of “Drown” on Youtube or Spotify. And have no fear of the music video, as there are no white-clad nuns performing religious ceremonies this time (yes, that’s also in the original).
