Most Vegas-born tattoos probably never see the light of day — unless, of course, they belong to Foo Fighters’ frontman, Dave Grohl. After the passing of Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister on Dec. 28, Grohl got tattoo in honor of the rock legend. His new ink is an ‘Ace of Spades’ on his left forearm — a Motorhead classic that Grohl performed with Kilmister and Slash at the 2010 Revolver Golden Gods Awards.
Foo Fighters tweeted the evening of Kilmister’s departure, “We’ve lost a friend & legend. My heart is broken. RIP Lemmy. Born To Lose, Lived To Win,” with a video attachment of “Stay Clean” off Motorhead’s 1979 album, Overkill.
Grohl’s permanent tribute to Kilmister appears to be more than just skin deep, as the two had been longtime friends. For Grohl’s 2004 metal project, Probot, in which Grohl recruited his favorite metal artists to contribute vocals and lyrics, Kilmister pitched in the song “Shake Your Blood,” and even joined in for the music video. Kilmister also made an appearance as the limo driver in the Foo Fighters’ music video for “White Limo” in 2011, posted below. And in the long list of special guests that played at Grohl’s birthday bash at The Forum last January — from Alice Cooper to Zakk Wylde to David Lee Roth — Kilmister was the final artist on the mic that evening.
CNN announced that Kilmister’s untimely death at age 70 was due to short, acute battle with cancer, coming as a shock to the entire rock community, Foo Fighters included. His memory will live on in the hearts — and on the arms — of Motorhead’s dedicated fans.
