Though the song chosen for the newest James Bond film, Spectre, ended up as Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall,” Radiohead had been previously rumored to be frontrunners for the theme song. On Christmas day, Radiohead’s lead singer Thom Yorke released a series of tweets and a link to a SoundCloud track, detailing that the band had in fact been asked to write a song for Spectre and that though it didn’t work out, the song is very special to them. Read the tweets and listen to the song, “Spectre” below:

The slow, big-band track is a beautiful take on a potential Bond theme, and Radiohead did a great job fitting their signature sound into something that could have ended up in the film.
Radiohead gave a slight update on their ninth upcoming album back in September; most recently, Thom Yorke played new songs at the Pathway to Paris concert series – one of which he said “would usually be Jonny [Greenwood]’s bit,” hinting that the song, called “Silent Spring,” might be a new Radiohead track. Meanwhile, Greenwood’s separate album, Junun, was due out in November.
