Now that Christmas cheer is over and done with, Wrekmeister Harmonies is looking to spread the doom on their 2016 East Coast tour with Bell Witch. With throat-splitting vocals and lo-fi guitar shreds, the two bands will start in Brooklyn, NY on Feb. 23 and end in Burlington, VT in March.
Wrekmeister Harmonies is wedged in the unique genre of “pastoral doom,” which becomes self-explanatory after watching the title track music video of their newest album, Night of Your Ascension, involving an eerie dinner feast and a resurrected mummy, and — how else? — ending with a bloody murder. Headed by doom master J.R. Robinson, Wrekmeister Harmonies seeks to unveil the emotional experience of finding beauty in the darkness of humanity.
The Chicago-based group, described as having “floating membership from across the globe,” released their debut in 2009 with Recordings Made in Public Spaces: Volume One. Since then, they released two more albums before creating Night of Your Ascension. The 32-minute gloom-fest features over 30 musicians that slowly melt down to the depths of human experience.
Wrekmeister Harmonies are touring with Bell Witch, a doom duo that employs only bass, drums and vocals to create their dark blend of music. Bell Witch released an LP, Four Phantoms, in 2015, with four tracks focused on judgment and suffocation. After having toured across the U.S. in December, the two bands will start the second leg of their tour at New York’s Saint Vitus at the end of February, performing 12 shows in two weeks.
