English indie rock band The Coral have announced the release of a new album, Distance Inbetween, for March 4, 2016, via Ignition Records. The album will be the group’s first new LP in more than five years, since they released Butterfly House in 2010.
The Coral was formed in 1996 and have released six full-length studio albums, starting with 2002’s self-titled debut. Following that album, they released some more albums fairly rapid-fire: Magic and Medicine in 2003, Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker in 2004, The Invisible Invasion in 2005 and Roots & Echoes in 2007 before releasing their most recent, the aforementioned Butterfly House.
Though the band has been active since 1996 without an acknowledged hiatus, several members have worked on other projects during the past five years. In 2012, The Coral’s drummer Ian Skelly released an album called Cut From A Star and toured in support of it. He later worked with Paul Molloy as a side project called Serpent Power and released an album under that name in 2015. The Coral’s lead singer, James Skelly, released an album in 2013 called Love Undercover.
Guitarist Lee Southall has stated that he is not involved with The Coral’s latest album and tour this year, due to being involved with a solo project. He previously recorded an album called Goodbye to the River with vocalist Molly Jones, but the album was never released. Bassist Paul Duffy collaborated with Eva Petersen on John Davide’s animated Lunar Lament Of A Haunted Heart as well as providing a soundtrack for Jade Mortimer’s short film Risen. Keyboardist Nick Power published a book of lyrics and poetry entitled Small Town Chase and collaborated on The Lost Brothers’ album New Songs of Dawn and Dust.
According to Brooklyn Vegan, the band has taken a different approach to Distance Inbetween than they have to their other albums. James Skelly said:
Before we started making the album we had discussed that we wanted it to be more minimal and rhythmical. We thought if you’ve got a rhythm section thats been playing together for almost twenty years, why not make that the centre of the songs?
