Lynyrd Skynyrd has cancelled their December dates due to guitarist Gary Rossington’s recent heart procedures. The guitarist is the only surviving member of the original group lineup when the band was founded and recently suffered a heart attack this year. Fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd will have to wait for next year when the group reschedules their tour dates.
The tour dates that are affected for this year include the performances in Loveland, Colorado, on December 4 and Mescalero, New Mexico, December 5. The band was going to tour those dates specifically alongside Brantley Gilbert. Full refunds are available to anyone who has bought tickets for those dates at their point of purchase or through the box office. The band will reschedule for next year and perform alongside Dierks Bentley, Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton at the Tortuga Music Festival April 15to April 17 of next year at Fort Lauderdale Bach Park in Florida. The Tortuga Music Festival is about raising awareness and funds for ocean and marine research.
Gary Rossington was from the original lineup of Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1997, six people died in a plane accident claiming the lives of the other members of the original lineup Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, the planes two pilots and the assistant road manager were killed after the plane crashed into the Gillsburg, Mississippi swamp. Gary Rossington survived the crash but a year earlier, Rossington was in a car crash in Jacksonville, under the influence when he was driving the car, but managed to survive. In 1980, Rossington co-founded the Rossington-Collins Band with fellow Skynyrd guitarist Allen Collins. Hopefully Rossington has a complete and healthy recovery from his heart attack and doesn’t need to stop playing and rocking all night long.
