“No Colonial Fiction” is the new single off Yasiin Bey‘s upcoming mixtape The Human Beings (My Favorite Band). The video for “No Colonial Fiction” is set for release sometime this week.
The conscious rapper formerly known as Mos Def, released the single in light of devastating Paris attacks. Bey who is currently in Germany preparing for a performance, took time to talk to journalist Ferrari Sheppard for their own multimedia project, A Country Called Earth. “Everything from Tamir Rice, to the Paris shootings, to what’s happening to the students in University of Missouri … it’s all connected, it’s all the same thing,” Bey said, calling for people to embrace humanity and not act like machines. “And by the way, a big giant fuck off to ISIS. You don’t represent nothing about Islam or nothing about the Prophet. And another giant fuck off to everybody who’s trying to say, ‘See, this is Islam’s fault.'”
The song echoes many of Bey’s sentiments from the interview. Rapping over a dreamy production you hear, “Do something, Do something real. Zulu Nation is creation, we want no colonial fiction.”
Bey adds in the interview, “I need anybody, anybody with a Twitter account, Facebook, whatever: This is the time to be talking about the dignity and nobility of being a human being, not a machine.”
