Courtney Barnett and Paul Kelly just collaborated a brilliant cover of “Charcoal Lane.” The song was originally written by Archie Roach, but this cover is like the lemon in the lemonade.
Charcoal Lane is an album from 1990 that was created by Australian musician, Archie Roach. The Warner Music Australia label is making a 25 anniversary of the album and Roach’s work. Paul Kelly was the original producer. This single can be found on the other disc included in the anniversary edition of Roach’s album, Charcoal Lane, which includes Courtney’s cover of the self-titled track. The duet between Barnett and Kelly is perhaps one of the most interesting sounds. Through the drums, Kelly’s voice starts to sing and then Courtney’s floaty voice just become art of the mix. Eventually Barnett is loud and clear until the end where she dozes off with the harmonica taking over.
The anniversary album will be released in November of this year. The covers include musicians Barnett, Briggs, Gurrumul, Dewayne Everettsmith, Emma Donovan and Dan Sultan. The song is available through purchase on SoundCloud.
