The Flaming Lips announced that they are releasing Heady Nuggs 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997, which is the deluxe 20th anniversary edition boxed set of the band’s highly influential album, Clouds Taste Metallic.
Released in 1995, Clouds Taste Metallic was The Flaming Lips’ seventh album, and the last to feature Ronald Jones on guitar. The album was well received by critics and earned high praise from All Music, which stated that it was “a masterful collection that completes the Flaming Lips’ odyssey into the pop stratosphere,” according to a press release.
Heady Nuggs 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997 is available for pre-order through The Lips Official Store. Those fans who choose to pre-order will receive a series of instantly downloadable previously unheard rare songs on a selection of dates leading up to the boxed set’s November release. The first rarity that is available, now, is a live version of “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles.”
This new 20th anniversary boxed set will be released in several formats, including a three-CD set, along with digital download equivalents, and a numbered, limited edition five-LP box set.
The Flaming Lips Official Store will carry an exclusive numbered and colored vinyl version of the five-LP box set along with three exclusive out-of-print t-shirts and three out-of-print posters, which were sold during the Clouds Taste Metallic era, and featured designs by Wayne.
The CD set features three discs.
The first disc in the collection is the full Clouds Taste Metallic album, along with the rarities The King Bug Laughs (Oddities and Rarities). The King Bug Laughs curates a number of previously unreleased songs, promotional releases, and tracks that were only previously available on compilations into one place for the first time.
The second of the three discs is called Due To High Expectations The Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles For Your Balloons, which was a promotion only compilation CD prior to the boxed set. And, last but certainly not least, the third disc is an unreleased live recording of the band’s performance at Moe’s in Seattle, Washington, that took place on May 10th, 1996.
