In support of their forthcoming album, BAYS, Fat Freddy’s Drop as released the single “Razor.”
Fat Freddy’s Drop has announced their fourth album to be released on October 23rd 2015 and has released its first single “Razor” in support. This album will follow the success of their previous release Black Bird, which was released in 2013. The album is named after their own BAYS Studio, where the new LP was recorded. This is the first record that was released by the band that was written and conceived entirely in the studio.
“It’s been a more creative process writing this album in the studio rather than recording songs which have been well road-tested,” notes vocalist Joe Dukie.
“Razor” is a marriage between the rhythmic and harmonic styles of jazz and reggae with a techno flare. There is no mistake that this is a Fat Freddy’s Drop single and if the album is anything close to what can be heard this band is in for a very successful ride. The single can be listened to below.
Fat Freddy’s Drop is a seven-piece band from Wellington, New Zealand. They are known for their wide array of different musical styles including dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues and techno. The band was formed in 1990 as a jam band of members from other bands that ended up sparking a full time devotion from each musician. NPR has been quoted describing the band as “taking the swagger of Jamaican dub, throw in a little Memphis soul and send it halfway down the globe, and what comes back? The band Fat Freddy’s Drop.” The Guardian called Fat Freddy’s Drop “the epitome of old school cool.”
