Eagles of Death Metal is the rock n roll side project of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme and singer/guitarist Jesse Hughes. They’ve released three albums since since 2004 and this year will see the release of their latest album called Zipper Down, seven years from the release of their last album, Heart On.
The album is set to be available on October 2 and they’ve just released a new single called “Silverlake”. Silverlake being the Los Angeles neighborhood that is infamous for everything ‘hipster’ and supposedly ‘cool’. The song and album’s production is a bit of a departure from past records that employ the “desert rock” sound that Homme is known to produce. It’s sonic approach is slightly more polished but still retains the dry, distorted guitar sounds that is a QOTSA and EODM staple. The treatment on the vocals is much clearer and oftentimes layered with echo and reverb. The driving rock n roll rhythm is ever present and invites the listener to either shake some booty or spaz out like Iggy Pop.
The songs lyrics takes light jabs at the hipster culture that oftentimes define the Silverlake ‘hood. With lines like, “I am from Silverlake and I don’t give a damn”. And even more blatant pokes at the hipster’s perceived sense of entitlement, “I am from Silverlake and I am in a cool band, don’t you know who I am?”
Listen to “Silverlake” here:
Josh Homme announced the production of Zipper Down last year. Last June he reunited with the band behind the drum kit at a show in Paris, France for a performance of their first hit, ““Want You So Hard”.
As well as being released on LP, CD and MP3, Zipper Down will also be released on cassette tape. Also included on the album is a cover of the 1982 Duran Duran classic, “Save a Prayer”. It would be interesting to see how EODM tackle this immortal 80’s track.
