One of the year’s biggest breakout stars, BØRNS, is bringing his tour to San Francisco on November 22nd. The 23-year-old has skyrocketed in critical and commercial acclaim since he released “10,000 Emerald Pools” in 2014. While that track has all the trappings of a modern indie jam with a mellow downbeat and arching harmonies, new fans were pleasantly surprised to find the artist’s range and musical depth. His debut release pulls from every direction of the music world while remaining unabashedly pop.
Thanks to a breathtakingly high falsetto and massive power chords, BORNS frequently recalls a current take on glam rock mainstays like T.Rex or even Queen. Big, arena-style riffs dominate the record, but he keeps it current with nods to current electro and pop. It’s no surprise that his music has been aggressively courted by brands and companies. Hulu, amongst other brands, have licensed his song “Electric Love” for their ad spots. It speaks to BORNS potential to be a major crossover hitmaker, so it might be a good idea to catch him now before he hits the mainstream.
Held at the just 500-person capacity Independent, this show is a guaranteed dance party. With his long hair and affinity for over-the-top outifts, the Michigan-born singer gives off an air of retro rocker excess that’s long been missing from the stage. He tours with Avid Dancer, a fellow lover of past influences. His most recent record is a similar meld of psychedelia and classic pop, and the two complement each other for one epic night this November. Act fast- tickets will sell out quick.
