Big Grams, the new collaborative project between rapper Big Boi and electronic rockers Phantogram, have released another single, “Lights On.”
The supergroup’s self-titled debut album will be out on September 25 via Epic Records. The first announcement that the two artists were working together on an EP happened in spring 2014, when Big Boi stated that they already had songs which they worked on together that didn’t make the cut for his album. In autumn of the same year, Phantogram joined Big Boi onstage at Tabernacle to perform their collaborative track “CPU” from Big Boi’s album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors.
They announced the completion of their forthcoming album in August 2015 and the release date and track list was revealed earlier this month. The album will feature tracks with hip hop duo Run the Jewels and electronic DJ and producer Skrillex.
Big Grams has now released a track called “Lights On” from the upcoming album, a week in advance of the full album release. The group premiered another track, “Fell In The Sun,” on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe last week, but this latest song is available for online streaming via YouTube. “Lights On” is a mid-tempo track that comes in at just over four minutes long, with a great electronic beat and vocals by Phantogram’s Sarah Barthel. The chorus repeats the phrase ‘I hope you keep your lights on for me,’a sort of plea for companionship on a dark night. At almost three minutes into the song, Big Boi appears and the beat changes, shining a spotlight more on his verse than the music itself. Listen to “Lights On” below.
