On September 10th, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joanna Newsom announced that she is doing a short European tour.
The tour, which is in support of her upcoming release, Divers, begins on Halloween in Manchester, England. Then, after another show in Brighton, the songstress will travel to mainland Europe to give concerts in Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and France, before returning to England for a final show in London on November 9th, 2015.
Divers is the long awaited follow up to Newsom’s 2010 release, Have One On Me. The new album will be released on October 23rd, 2015, via Drag City. So, Divers arrives just in time for the launch of the European tour.
So, what has Newsom been working on in the five years between Have One On Me and Divers?
In the meantime, she appeared in an episode of the popular series Portlandia, and she appeared in and narrated the film Inherent Vice. Newsom went on to appear at several festivals, including Treasure Island in 2012, and the Pitchfork Music Festival, the following year.
Next, she covered “The North Star Grassman and the Ravens,” in a music video. “The North Star Grassman and the Ravens” was originally recorded in 1971 by the late English singer-songwriter Sandy Denny, who was perhaps best known as the lead singer for Fairport Convention. Then, Newsom teamed up with Johnny Greenwood and Supergrass to perform “Spooks,” which was a Radiohead song that appears on the soundtrack to Inherent Vice. And most recently, in support of her upcoming album, Newsom released the music video for “Sapokanikan.”
