Making The Most Of The Night
Carly Rae Jepsen is so, so much more than her amazing 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe,” which rightfully took off, with or without the support of Justin Bieber. She’s even more than her latest single “I Really Like You,” which is accompanied by a video featuring Tom Hanks. For the Canadian-bred singer’s recent release Emotion, The Biebs gets a credit again as a producer, along with his producer Scooter Braun. She threw a roller skating party for her fans and spent plenty of time on the rink herself, skating to her new pop ballads. And a roller rink, it turns out, is a perfect place to listen to this album.
Jepsen is clearly putting her all into Emotion. Her belting vocals put up a fight against the 80’s-esque power ballads that would also fit perfectly into the soundtrack of Drai’s after-hours nightclubs in Vegas.
“All That” starts out sounding like a hit from one of your favorite early-90’s divas like Mariah or Whitney, although her vocals aren’t to the caliber of those ladies. Lyrically, it’s mostly about love and staying hopeful, like in “Boy Problems”: “I broke with my boyfriend today and I don’t really care / I’ve got worse problems,” and in opener “Run Away With Me,” when she declares, “Over the weekend, we could turn the world to gold.”
“Let down my guard tonight, I just don’t care anymore,” she professes in “Warm Blood,” a nice change of attitude from another recently released “Blood”-titled song from a far more popular pop star.
Emotion is fuller than previous release Kiss, and only just a little bit better since Kiss was also a great album. While neither album has made headlines for sales or popularity, there’s no reason they shouldn’t have. And simply put, Emotion is a fun, uplifting album.
