On Friday, September 4th, Run The Jewels headlined at Dismaland, a counter Disneyland themed park put on by Banksy.

Banksy could not have dreamed of a more energizing and fresh group when he decided to invite Run The Jewels as a headliner to his Dismaland “bemusement park.” With big expectations to fill and an eager crowd to please, the duo delivered for their fans. With the sound of rock legends, Queen, to usher in these “champions” their intro set them up to blow the crowd away. The Duo performed some of their key tracks, “A Christmas Fucking Miracle” and “Run The Jewels,” from their debut self-titled album and proved why they are one of the best new hip- hop acts out there.

The chemistry that Killer Mike and El-P share while on stage is out of this world. The way that the two feed off of each other’s energy and the way that their showmanship works to counterbalance the other’s is unparalleled. The entire performance is matched by a mob of screaming lyric-spewing head-bumping fans.

Feeding off the audience’s energy during A Christmas Fucking Miracle’s second verse, Killer Mike decided to join his fans in the audience and finish out his verse and the song amongst them. There is no greater barrier than the one between the stage and the audience and when an artist decides to break that barrier it is a perfect embodiment of the emotion that the performance holds.

Run The Jewels did a great job to help demonstrate the dark and artistic view behind Dismaland. Their aggressive lyrics and abrasive performance was the perfect yang to the Disneyland counter theme. From the minute that they took the stage to the roar of the crowd when the wrapped up their set, the duo played the role of anarchist that Banksy was counting on when asking them to headline his theme park festival.

Ryan Fricke: Music is my therapy, which I could not function without. I am currently finishing my senior year a Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida with a Journalism major and a Creative Writing Minor. I first realized I wanted to become a Music Journalist the minute I learned that I could get paid to do the two things I love most, writing and listening to music. I have yet to decide which I am more infatuated with but for the time being I will happily house them to their stalemate. My plans after graduation are unclear but I hope to further gain experience in this profession.
