Prince Releases New Album HITNRUN Phase One On Tidal

Using Jay-Z’s new online streaming service, Tidal, Prince releases his new album on Monday.

Prince’s new album, HITNRUN, is getting a lot of attention for its sole release on Tidal. The artist has removed all of his works from all other online streaming services except Tidal as of July 1st of this year. According to NYDailyNews.com, he chose to make this change and to devote himself to Jay-Z’s $9.99 a month online streaming service for one simple reason, better sounding music. Tidal has an option for its listeners to upgrade their sound with a high fidelity option for a surcharge of $10.

For anyone that is a true fan of Prince’s sound this album is perfect for you. For example, this wouldn’t be a Prince album if there weren’t the flat out dance tracks, which are found in “Ain’t About to Stop” and “FallInLove2Nite.” With a screaming guitar track like “HARDROCKLOVER” we are reminded of his power behind the instrument. Tracks such as “X’s Face,” utilize an obvious EDM theme woven in through the legends iconic soft and edgy voice. Utilizing all kinds of genres throughout the track list, he has done a wonderful job of making this album deliciously “Prince.”

Apart from Prince’s backup band, 3rdEyeGirl, there is a whole mess of talent that the Purple one chose to accompany him on the album. According to STEREOGUM, the album features appearances by Rita Ora, Lianne La Havas, Curly Fryz, and Judith Hill.

The only downfall of his album is that there is no fresh and groundbreaking new innovations within the music. While everything we get is perfectly primed to the sound that Prince has created and perfected for himself, it is all stuff that we have heard from him before. As the saying goes, however, “if it isn’t broken, why fix it?”

Starting today as a last surprise to his fans, Prince will release what he calls the “Purple Pick of the Week” through Tidal’s “What’s New” section. The purple pick will include a different new song or rarity of his choosing, according to STEREOGUM.

Ryan Fricke: Music is my therapy, which I could not function without. I am currently finishing my senior year a Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida with a Journalism major and a Creative Writing Minor. I first realized I wanted to become a Music Journalist the minute I learned that I could get paid to do the two things I love most, writing and listening to music. I have yet to decide which I am more infatuated with but for the time being I will happily house them to their stalemate. My plans after graduation are unclear but I hope to further gain experience in this profession.
