Back in March, it was announced that Kelela would be releasing her six-track EP, Hallucinogen, on May 5th.
Due to the musician’s meticulous nature, the EP was delayed, but the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter has now announced an October 9th release date, along with a new single, “Rewind.”
“Rewind” debuted on Zane Lowe’s Beats1 show for Apple Music. The song, deemed by Kelela’s press release as ‘the spiritual centerpiece of the EP,’ is engaging and surges one back to twenty years ago, representing elements of 90’s dance tracks that converge with soul; creating a middle that’s outcome is smooth and addictive.
“I think it’s more honest and realistic to start with the ultimate low,” said Kelela about the song,”but equally there has to be hope, and this is where “Rewind” comes in.”
Kelela got her start as a jazz singer and began playing in indie and metal bands, all while collaborating with Animals As Leader’s guitarist Tosin Abasi on her own music. She released a mixtape in 2013, Cut 4 Me, which consists of all original vocals over songs by artists such as Napolian and Fade to Mind, that was made to sound like a remix album.
Hallucinogen is set to be released via Kelela’s Cherry Coffee imprint and Warp Records. Kelela has yet to announce a tour supporting the EP. However, you can catch her at Atlanta’s first Afropunk Fest next month.
