Singer/guitarist Phil Cook has released a new collaboration with Justin Vernon called “Ain’t It Sweet.”
Cook, most famously known for his work with folk bands Megafaun and DeYarmond Edison, is set to release his debut solo album Southland Mission on Sept. 11. “Ain’t It Sweet” is the first single off the album.
For the single, Cook joined forces with former DeYarmond Edison band mate Justin Vernon, who now fronts Bon Iver. Pitchfork reported that Vernon provided the track’s backing harmonies.
Though famous for his work with Bon Iver, Vernon also has a history of collaborations with bands like The Staves and The National. Most recently, he even performed with Kanye West in a Glastonbury performance.
“Ain’t It Sweet” is a “soulful take on retro country-rock and folk,” according to The Line of Best Fit. The track, mixed by engineer John Ashley, features guitar, fiddle, and organ.
