Everyone may have known Miley Cyrus would be the host of the 2015 Video Music Awards, but no one expected the surprise that would be thrown at the audience when the show was over. Cyrus announced that she had a new album, and if this wasn’t wild enough, she also exclaimed that it would be free for all to download online. The collaborative album, entitled Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, is quite different from any of her other music. She and Wayne Coyne, the visionary frontman of acclaimed indie-rock legends The Flaming Lips, teamed up and it’s no shocker that this duo created 23 tracks with such a unique sound.
The title, Miley Cyrus & her Dead Petz, has no hidden meaning. The tracks tell tales about the rapid sequence of deaths that occurred amongst Miley’s cherished animals: Floyd, her precious pup, Pablow, her beloved blowfish, and Twinkle, a cat that belonged to one of Miley’s close friends. Clearly, these deaths were not taken lightly. Her mourning resulted a stage of artistic catharsis, and because of this, we now have access to an entire album.
Dead Petz was recorded in multiple locations, ranging from the Lips’ Oklahoma City compound to the comfort of Miley’s very own home garage studio. The album features other artists; such as, Mike WILL Made-It, who adds his renowned contemporary vibe to the tracks, iconoclastic producer Oren Yoel, and Sarah Barthel of neo-electronica duo Phantogram. Big Sean, the Detroit MC we all know and love, is featured on the track “Tangerine.”
