Zola Jesus has released a new video for her song, “Nail.” “Nail” is the fourth single from her critically acclaimed album, Taiga, which is out now.
This new video was directed by Jacqueline Castel, who has previously collaborated with Zola Jesus on several previous videos including, “Night,” “Sea Talk,” “Clay Bodies,” “Seekir,” and “Vessel.”
It shows Zola Jesus, who’s given name is Nika Roza Danilova, performing the song in a bed that deprives her of sensory perception, which was custom made by Kink Engineering, the S&M pioneers.
In press release, Castel explained her fetishistic inspiration, saying, “[t]he video for Nail conceptually explores the dualistic themes of vulnerability and strength, bondage and freedom, death and rebirth in parallel to the lyrical content of the song. Performing within a custom made sensory deprivation bed built by S&M pioneers Kink Engineering, Nika was sealed between sheets of opaque black latex with a high powered shop vac for each take – a physically aggressive and demanding form of restraint that requires breathing through rubber tubing constructed within the bed. Stripped of the superfluities of the flesh, her performance reveals the surreality of the dehumanized form.”
In the same release, Danilova commented, “I am extremely grateful to have joined up once again with my good friend Jacqueline Castel for the ’Nail’ video. We have almost telepathic creative instincts, and together we are like one big arm – pushing to the point of break.”
