The Weekend has been blazing it up recently with hits like “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills” and with his second studio album Beauty Behind the Madness releasing on the 28, he’s released the video for “Tell All Your Friends” in the midst of all this hype.
The video, which was produced by Kanye West, consists of The Weeknd burying himself before shooting another man dead. Although we all know the alternative R&B singers sound is changing, he nods at his past within the song, “I’m that nigga with the hair / Singing ’bout popping pills, fucking bitches, living life so trill.” The lyrics describe the singers childhood growing up in Toronto where he was found often homeless, experimenting with drugs along with meaningless sex and theft. He told Rolling Stone, “As soon as I stepped foot in the city, it was a feeling I got addicted to,” he continued to say, “Lights, no sleep — either you’re going to make it or die trying.”
The singer does his own little song and dance in the midst of burying himself and killing another man before driving off into a dark road. Although his label, Republic, persuaded him to work in a more mainstream service, this song tips off some of his older vibes from his debut mixtape House of Balloons. “Tell All Your Friends” has just as much depth and layers of stories to peel as any other album he has worked on. With Beauty Behind the Madness set to release in 4 short days, the album already has a string of three Top Five singles- “Earned It,” “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face”- and includes features from Lana Del Rey and Ed Sheeran.
