Two years ago Mark Arm and his Mudhoney bandmates celebrated 25 years together by playing a set on top of the Space Needle. Last night he formed a supergroup of rock alumni from the Emerald City including Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagen, on the roof of Pike Place Market. The impromptu set was a fundraiser for The Pike Place Market Foundation.
Arm stood front a neon sign that read “Pike Place Market” belting out covers by the Stooges, backed by three of Seattle’s finest. The set list consisted of, “Little Doll,” “TV Eye,” “I Got a Right,” “I Need Somebody,” “Down on the Street,” “Search and Destroy” and “Loose.” The band needed a few songs to shake off the rust but by the time they hit on “I Got a Right” they were well in their element and went full speed like a freight train. Closing with “Search and Destroy” and “Loose” the group was starting to sound more like the original Stooges.
According to Rolling Stone, Arm took center stage as Iggy Pop, regardless of the fact that he was a hometown hero, his stage presence could burn bridges so it was only fitting he took the lead role. He seemed to be having a lot of fun with the lead role when he presented his fellow bandmates like McKagen as a former member of the Fartz and the Fastbacks, and McCready’s pre-Pearl Jam band Warrior. While Arm saved his energy to hit the high notes, McCready really ignited the performance by jumping into the air and dropping down to his knees to hit a few notes on his guitar. The performance won’t remind you of a Stooges cover band, but more of 4 friends getting together to jam out and have a great time, and making headlines while doing it.
