As Georgia-based band Kylesa gears up to release their new album, Exhausting Fire, they have released a stream of “Shaping The Southern Sky,” which is the second single from the record.
“Shaping The Southern Sky” continues the band’s theme of having two drum parts on their songs, which has become something of a defining characteristic for the Savannah sludge rockers. All of drum tracks on “Shaping The Southern Sky” and the Exhausting Fire lead single – “Lost and Confused” – were written and played solely by Carl McGinley, according to a press release.
“Shaping The Southern Sky” is a song that will catch listeners’ attentions from the start, thanks in part to the distortion on the guitar lines and bass parts, and those now-characteristic dueling drum lines, which will satisfy the appetites of those that like their music to be heavy. But, while this second single is heavy, it retains a melodic progression, and several key areas of transition to keep things interesting for those listening. One of those notable transitions is the featured bass and drum line that comes in at 2 minutes and 15 seconds, giving listeners a chance to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into McGinley’s drumming and the bass parts, respectively. Additionally, with a few sonic sounds added in for spice, this transition alerts listeners to a change with in the song, because it has created a sense of tension and wonder.
After several seconds pass, it revealed that there will be a change in the vocalist, with Phillip Cope temporarily taking over vocal duties from Laura Pleasants, in this portion of the song. To offset Cope’s vocals, and give him a chance to shine, his lines are sung at a slower pace than Pleasants. There is a haunting quality that’s found in his vocal delivery.
Then, the song begins to build, again, into a heavy jam session that reaches a crescendo with a blistering guitar solo.
