Dam-Funk announced his first album in nearly 6 years, Invite the Light. The album will be released in September. So far two singles have been released from the album “We Continue” and now “Glyde 2Nyte” with featured vocals from Leon Sylvers III and Leon Sylvers IV. The single also features 2 exclusive B-side bonus tracks. Some of the other collaborations on the new album include his Ariel Pink, Q-Tip, Snoop Dogg, Nite Jewel, Kid Sister, and Junie Morrison of the Ohio Players.
The vocals from Leon Sylvers III featured in the single is a memento to the humble beginnings of the musician. Dam-Funk first met the iconic producer for SOLAR Records and the man largely responsible for the “SOLAR Sound” while still a teenager in the late Eighties. Dam passed Sylvers a cassette of some of his music which resulted in an invitation to the studio to sit on a session with Atlantic Starr.
Invite the Light is an album that is a loosely autobiographical concept album inspired by the trials and tribulations of his personal and professional life of the last six years. The song is more or less a moment in Dam-Funk’s life where he was often working with other musicians who would need his talents for their songs. Such moments like working with rappers such as Mack 10 and MC Eiht. Eventually, Dam-Funk decided to make a do-or-die try to become an artist on his own terms. The single and the vocals of Sylvers and his son, are about how Dam-Funk himself who went from apprentice, a musician who has been playing with other famous musicians as an extra arm for their albums, to now a musician of his own that has produced an album that is a true reminder of the person he once was.
