On Thursday August 13th, 2015, FKA twigs released her new EP, M3LL155X, on the label Young Turks.
Four of five songs on this new EP – namely, “Figure 8,” “I’m Your Doll,” “In Time,” and “Glass & Patron” – are paired with music videos that FKA twigs directed. “The four film pieces come together to form one continuous FKA twigs-directed work, cementing who she is as an artist with an aggressive statement conceptualising the process of feeling pregnant with pain, birthing creativity and liberation,” according to a press release.
This new album is a continuation of the creative process that FKA twigs laid out, beginning with her last 2 EPs – EP1 and EP2, respectively. And, like this album, there were videos filmed that became an integral part of the final product for her fans. But, unlike the previous EPs, M3LL155X is “more ambitious than ever before and, in terms of concept, scope and execution, is undoubtedly one of FKA twigs’ most complete works to date,” according to a press release.
Although this is a new release, several of the songs should already be familiar to listeners and fans of FKA twigs. “Glass & Patron” was released as a YouTube Music Awards winning video earlier this year, and according to a press release, it has accumulated some 4 million views.
Next, “Figure 8” recently premiered on Zane Lowe’s show on Beats 1, and that video is significant, because it features French visual icon Michèle Lamy, the muse, business partner, creative collaborator, and wife of American fashion designer Rick Owens.
Then, most recently, “In Time” premiered on Sirius XMU on Thursday afternoon. It is described as being, “one of FKA twigs’ most direct yet compelling pieces to date,” according to a press release.
M3LL155X features both old and new collaborations, including a collaborative effort with BOOTS, following a chance meeting. The album was conceived over the course of several months after the release of LP1, FKA twigs’s debut, when she was in New York in between tours. BOOTS and FKA twigs, according to a press release, recorded the majority of this new EP in just a few days, as they pushed each other to explore their creativity. And, this album also finds FKA twigs paired up again with her long term collaborators, tic and Cy An, and she’s also reunited with the man that did her first magazine cover shoot, artist Matthew Stone, who did the artwork on M3LL155X.
FKA twigs’s new EP is out now! It is available for immediate download via iTunes, or streaming across multiple platforms, and will be released as a 12” vinyl record, as well.
