Canadian natives The Dears have released a new lyric video for the song “I Used To Pray For The Heavens to Fall.” Read more about the animated video and the band’s upcoming album release below.
The band formed in Montreal in 1995 and released their debut album, End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, in 2000. Since then, they’ve released four more LPs and will be releasing another on September 25, entitled Times Infinity Volume One. “I Used To Pray For The Heavens to Fall” was their first single off the forthcoming album, and it’s a mellow but lighthearted song. It features prominent guitar and some background vocal harmonies throughout. The refrain “Whose side are you on?” is repeated at the beginning of the track and then a few times throughout.
The lyric video is an animated tale following an anthropomorphic Hercules beetle around as he gathers everyday supplies to build a small, functioning rocket, which launches him into the home of a bug collector or entomologist. The last thing he sees as he falls to the floor is a pinned-up Hercules beetle that presumably is the protagonist’s former love. It was directed by Sinbad Richardson, a filmmaker and musician in indie band Donkey Hearts. Its bright color scheme and bug protagonist give the song and video both a light and playful feel, no matter how dark the subject of the tune or video may seem at times. Degeneration Street was the band’s last album release, in 2011. That was quite year for The Dears, who went on tour in support of Degeneration Street and played at the Under the Radar party at SXSW 2011. The group has had a number of lineup changes throughout its 20-year run, with vocalist Murray Lightburn being the only one of the six current members who was a part of the founding lineup of The Dears.
