On Thursday, July 30th, TV on the Radio performed at First Avenue while passing through Minneapolis on their way to Lollapalooza in Chicago. The indie rock band honored their reappearance in the Mill City by closing their set with a captivating classic track from the hometown icon, Prince.
After the release of a new video and new music earlier this year, TV on the Radio returned to Minneapolis while touring ‘Seeds’, their most recent album. There, they shared a cover of the Purple Scion’s classic in his hometown alongside Nona Marie Invie, singer for opening act RONiiA. An emotional and empowering performance of “Purple Rain” played out on a stage aglow with purple lights. Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe exchanged lead vocals before bringing out Invie for an epic close to the set.
In June, TV on the Radio performed in Brisbane, Australia. There, the Brooklyn indie group launched their encore with a cover of the Game of Thrones theme song, and then transitioned from the rework into “Ride”, a new track from their fifth album.
Mirroring their previous performances, TV on the Radio’s soulful rendition of “Purple Rain” in Prince’s hometown will not be easily forgotten. Watch the fan-recorded footage of the tribute performance below:
