Two years ago, mxdwn interviewed TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe where he briefly mentioned Nevermen, his group with Faith No More‘s Mike Patton and Doseone.
“We started this in 2007, 2008. We’ve been working on it really slowly in between everyone’s other projects. This is exciting because it’s a funny thing to get two songs for a few months every 5 years. It sounds so fresh and bizarre.”
Bizarre could be a good way to describe what the band has created. Nevermore has been in the works half a decade, but patience had always been the key to the band’s recording process. This week, they’ve finally released a single, “Tough Towns,” for their self-titled debut.
The self-proclaimed “leaderless trio” keeps that statement intact with “Tough Towns,” which has all three members harmonizing their vocals. The song itself creates an imagery through sound effects, such as finger snapping and doors shutting, and provides an eerie and industrial element to it, with lyrics that bring reference to various cities, such as the “Go Pittsburgh” chanted in the beginning, to name dropping Cleveland and Omaha.
Although none of the members of Nevermen are from those cities, the meaning of the “Tough Towns” still regards location and represents the lackluster of a small town life. “Anyone remotely young, feeling inexplicably inspired in the ‘nowhere’ they are from. May you soon escape with style into elsewhere,” says Doseone, who hails from Nampa, Idaho.
