Deradoorian released a new single from the upcoming debut solo album, The Expanding Flower Planet, “Komodo.” The album will arrive later in August and tour dates are being scheduled with guest Laetitia Sadier. “It’s metaphor for the expansion of consciousness,” says Angel Deradoorian. Although the Los Angeles-based musician is most recognized for her work as the bassist and vocalist for Dirty Projectors, in 2009 she released a solo EP Mind Raft under her surname. Deradoorian’s single cites influences that range from Krautrock and psychedelic rock to Middle Eastern and Native American rhythms. The musician has worked with Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks, Flying Lotus, and members of Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend, among others in past collaborations.
The artist will also embark on a full North American tour which kicks off with an album release show in New York and a full run of dates in September. Recorded in various locales over a period of several years, sessions began from scratch in Baltimore, 2011, before moving to her studio in LA. Roughly 90 percent was written and performed solely by Deradoorian, with assists from drummers Jeremy Hyman and Michael Lockwood, guest vocalists Niki Randa and Arlene Deradoorian and engineer/co-producer Kenny Gilmore. The Expanding Flower Planet is available to preorder now on iTunes.
