In case you missed it, last friday, Faith No More lit up the stage at Red Hat Ampitheater-Raleigh, NC as they sung “The lion sleeps tonight” (“In The Jungle” tag) during “Midlife Crisis”. Back from an eleven year hibernation (energy well reserved), the Bay area rockers performed numerous shows between 2009-2012 bringing back their influential touch to the modern rock era. The rockers brought out special guest Refused and performed an entire set of their newest self-produced album, Sol Invictus. According to Faith No More Blog, the band opened up with their hit, “Mutherf**%er” and closed out on “Just A Man”. Longest remaining FNM members Billy Gould (Bassist), Roddy Bottum (Keyboardist), Mike Bordin (Drummer), along with band members Jon Hudson (Guitarist) and Mike Patton (Vocalist) was armed and ready to have the crowd singing along to their new guitar rocking hits.
The “Midlife Crisis” performance was electrifying leading into the classic wimoweh (“Wimba Way” or “Awimbawe) harmonies. At one point (after Patton leaned into an humble bow), the crowd was out-singing the band! The crowd chanted the lyrics and roared as the music broke into a melodic bridge of “In The Jungle” as he cued the band. He gave an excellent rendition of the melody “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by the Tokens. He nailed it! Randomly sung but it showed the creativity, versatility, musically, poetically and ingeniously expressive propelling lyrics in the raw. During the “Midlife Crisis” set, you can’t help but notice the psychedelic rocker hand go up during the around 2:26. There was hearty chuckles and random spurts of laughter as the crowd got an experimental kick out of the band’s rendition of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. The crowd was truly amazed at the “Midlife Crisis” break. The energy was so high as FNM broke back into the chorus, “You’re perfect, yes, it’s true, but without me you’re only you, your menstruating heart, it ain’t bleedin’ enough for two, it’s a midlife crisis…”.
