Unknown Mortal Orchestra released a new song “Ur Life One Night,” which will be featured on their new LP Multi-Love. Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s album’s overarching theme is about a three-way love story coming to an end, the video finds two mortal men constantly in pursuit of an unattainable goddess. The visually incredible story is told through the kaleidoscopic, magical spectrum of traditional Asian art. Unknown Mortal Orchestra previously released another single “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone.” The music video was directed by Manoj Leonel Jahson.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra will continue their U.S. tour through next month before embarking on a long, European tour kicking off September 8th in Helsinki. The band has also released additional tour dates for their upcoming fall tour in support of their new album. Multi-Love, precedes the album II, in which Nielson addressed the pain of being alone and the pain of being together. The album title reflects the opposite of isolation: love, connectedness, entanglement.
“I was really obsessed with working with a director in India because it seemed crazy that they have the biggest film industry in the world and yet I’d never made a video there,” UMO mastermind Ruban Nielson, “I feel really privileged to have connected with [director] Manoj [Leonel Jahson] and to have this video.”
Ruban Neilson recently interviewed with Pitchfork about the thrid album, Multi-Love, and what it personally means for him to create such an album. The album itself reflects the way Neilson views his art, his life, and the connection between the two. “I wanted my kids to be an influence again,” Neilson says. The third album is more than the reflection of entanglement, but also how the founder of Unknown Mortal Orchestra sees himself as a father and whether or not his children see him as a good father.
After touring behind his first two albums for nearly three years, Nielson arranged to take a year off, so that he could write, record, and spend more time at home with his family. But as work on Multi-Love began in earnest last year, Nielson and his wife found themselves reconsidering the outlines of their relationship. The music video for “Ur Life One Night” was about the physical and emotional connection that Neilson and his wife shared. “It’s not that this song is about her,” Nielson sings in the album’s hypnotic title cut. “All songs are about her.”
