Artists fighting for the rights to their music has not been a quiet subject this year (looking at you, Swift). The latest group to feud with their record label is Wavves – a couple days ago, the band’s front man, Nathan Williams, blasted Warner Bro. Records on Twitter when they took down a single that Wavves put up without their permission.
Stereogum reported that Williams took to Twitter on Tuesday, with the first of a barrage of tweets reading, “i hate you @wbr.” The ambiguity of the tweet ended when he wrote “you guys i literally hate @wbr they wanna pull ‘way too much’ already.” After Warner Bros. took it down, Williams first threatened to release the entire album; he then put out “Way Too Much” on SoundCloud and tweeted the link, adding “fuck it.”
Warner Bros. didn’t stop there. Williams tweeted a screenshot of an email from SoundCloud, claiming they would remove “Way Too Much” because it was copyrighted by Warner Bros. Records. As of right now, it’s still on SoundCloud.
Earlier this year, Wavves released a video for “Leave” from the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack and “No Life For Me” on SoundCloud from their upcoming collaboration with Cloud Nothings. However, these are unrelated to the Warner Bros. label.
Wavves’ Twitter feed right now is a mix of personal aggressive tweets, retweets from fans and WWE gifs. The timeline of tweets aimed at Warner Bros. is below:
