Swedish duo Icona Pop released a new track today called “First Time,” which is included on their just-released Emergency EP.
The song premiered on Thursday, July 16 – just a day before the EP dropped via Record Company TEN/Big Beat/Atlantic Records. The album release was announced last-minute, but Icona Pop released the first single, also called “Emergency,” earlier in the summer. The Emergency EP is available via iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and Amazon. The duo will be touring North America with One Direction from July 21 until September 12. The first single has a fast and steady beat and features horns following each chorus. They also premiered a music video for “Emergency” in mid-June, which features dramatic makeup and costumes.
“The First Time” is by no means mellow, but it isn’t as obvious a club track as the EP’s title track. The song has lyrics reminiscing on the first time that two people do any number of things together, including getting high and falling in love. It was actually the first track that the pair wrote together when they formed Icona Pop in 2012, but decided not to record it until this year. Aino Jawo, one half of the duo, said, “The song has a whole new meaning to it now, looking back and reflecting on how far we’ve come since those early days when we were broke and didn’t have a clue what we were doing or where we were going!” In addition, the other half of Icona Pop, Caroline Hjelt, said, “It’s such a special song to us and really is a celebration of friendship, whether it’s with your boyfriend or girlfriend or best friend.” Stream “The First Time” below to listen.
