Jimmy Carlton Winfrey, an associate of Birdman and Young Thug’s tour manager, was indicted by the state of Georgia for shooting at Lil Wayne’s tour buses in April of 2015.
Winfrey, according to the indictment that Rolling Stone obtained, came along side Lil Wayne’s tour buses at a high rate of speed, and opened fire; then, he attempted to hide the Camaro that he was driving at the time of the incident.
The indictment opens with a statement that identifies Winfrey, Young Thug, Birdman, and Lil Wayne as members of the Blood gang, before claiming that the defendant – Winfrey – is a high ranking member of a Bloods subgroup, Young Slime Life. Then, according to Rolling Stone, the document details the Cash Money Records schism that has put Lil Wayne at odds with Birdman and Young Thug. Additionally, there is emphasis placed on Winfrey’s appearance in Young Thug’s music video for “Halftime,” because in the video, he is shown holding an assault rifle that is similar in looks to the one that was used in the April tour bus shooting, Rolling Stone reports.
Following this introduction, the indictment lays out the events that occurred on the days leading up to, and the day of, the April 26th shooting.
Some five days before, according to Rolling Stone, Young Thug had taken to Instagram to post a video, in which he made references to gang activity and threatened Lil Wayne. In addition to the threats, the video showed a series of weapons.
On the night of April 26th, Young Thug was booed off the stage at a gig in New Orleans, as the crowd was chanting Lil Wayne’s name, according to Rolling Stone. That same night, Lil Wayne had his own performance to give in Atlanta, Georgia. The documents that Rolling Stone obtained allege, “Winfrey and other Blood associates began organizing their attack around the time Lil Wayne hit the stage.”
Winfrey’s gang activation did not go unnoticed by police sources, and Lil Wayne’s tour buses were given an escort out of Atlanta.
The indictment claims that Winfrey followed the buses, and moved into position along side them, before opening fire into both buses with two handguns. Following the shooting, he called a cellphone that had been traced to Birdman; then, he proceeded to hide his car.
“On April 26th, Jimmy Winfrey carried out [Young Thug’s] threat [in the “Halftime” video] and shot at two tour buses,” the Rolling Stone obtained indictment claims.
Winfrey is due in court on July 17th, 2015, for a bond hearing.
Rolling Stone reached out to Young Thug’s team for comment, but a representative declined. And, representatives for Lil Wayne and Birdman did not immediately reply to Rolling Stone’s requests for comment.
Lastly, in an unrelated incident, the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Young Thug on Wednesday for allegedly making terroristic threats, according to Rolling Stone.
