Nathaniel Rateliff has been around the block a few times when it comes to releasing music, and for the most part stuck to a folk rock sound, Now he’s back with a new band and a new sound.
“Look It Here” is very different from most of Nathaniel Rateliff’s previous music. The song all but abandons Rateliff’s folk background, instead adopting a soulful, swingy pop style that seems to work just as well as his older endeavors. “Look It Here” is a song everyone can sing along to, with relatively simple and repetitive lyrics, as well as boot stomping drum beats, it’s the perfect song to listen to with some friends. The horns add a lot to the song, giving it a bit of character, adding soaring and inspiring feeling to the song that simply couldn’t be added by any other instrument. While the various instruments may give the song it’s character, Rateliff’s voice ties them all together into one neat enjoyable package. It’s awesome to see such a blending of genres occurring here, the folkier sounds of the guitars in the background combined with the horns giving you a blast of soul word wonderfully, something that not all modern music is able to accomplish with as much tact as Nathaniel and The Night Sweats have done.
The addition of a full band seems to be working well for Rateliff, having the assortment of saxophone, trumpet, bass, drums and keys behind him adds a bit of energy to his performances, according to Owen Ela, who recently had a chance to see the new outfit live and take some photos.
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats self titled album is set to be released August 21st, and is available for pre-order now.
