Alternative London-based band and 2015 Applauze SXSW Night Party alums The Vaccines have released a new music video for their song, “20/20.” The song originated on the band’s most recent album, English Graffiti.
The album’s title – English Graffiti – has lead NOISEY to postulate that the title was inspired or pays homage to the George Lucas film American Graffiti. And, the band’s frontman Justin Young supports this proposition, because he stated that “20/20” is “another ode to cinema [continuing] the theme of heightened reality and alternate universes,” according to NOISEY, which premiered the video for “20/20.”
This latest video by The Vaccines opens with a shot of an eyeball in a bubbling container of liquid. Following the opening credits, viewers are taken into what appears to be a bathroom as the main male character fills an eye dropper with an amber colored fluid. He inserts this liquid into his eyes as the band’s lead vocalist sings about “hindsight sees in 20/20.” Unlike normal eye drops that take away redness, this one burns upon application and then causes the main character’s irises to glow reddish-orange before fading to nearly black.
Next, he ventures out into a bar and casino area where an older gentleman removes his own eyeball to reveal that the part behind his eye looks to be severely scarred, but upon closer inspection the ‘eye’ he removes is a rounded ocular prosthesis. The older gentleman goes on to place his eye on a pile of dollar bills, as our main character passes by his table.
Soon after that, viewers discover that the main character’s eye drops have given him another gift, in a sense. While it isn’t necessarily x-ray vision, the main man can now see through other people’s clothes, and sometimes through their bodies – even down to the level of muscles and organs. But, he doesn’t seem to employ this new power all of the time, because the women that are shown in the main casino room are viewed as being clothed, until he hones in on one woman in particular that catches his attention. It is never revealed why he chooses these particular people to closely inspect, but the concept and the outfits that the band members are wearing onstage are surprising.
