Mastodon has released a music video for their track “Asleep in the Deep” from their Once More ‘Round the Sun album.
The six-minute video covers the adventures of a house cat who is lured into a cave with strange creatures and imagery. The cat itself is transformed and transported to an alternate universe, where it befriends a squirrel who, in the end, sacrifices himself for the cat’s safe return home. The video appears to be drug-fueled, with a variety of colors and strange creatures, but the plot is surprisingly coherent. According to Rolling Stone, co-director and conceptualist Skinner says, “This concept was birthed out of my curiosity about what a cat really does at night while we are asleep. Where do they go? Cats have a very mysterious myth to them and I thought it would be cool to explore that, as little nocturnal heroes.”
Mastodon is celebrating the release with an exclusive web bundle including an “Asleep in the Deep” t-shirt and “old-school movie-style poster” with art by Skinner. The music video will make its television debut on June 20 via Adult Swim, at 4 am. Watch the “Asleep in the Deep” video below.
Mastodon co-headlined tour with Clutch this past spring, traveling across the United States and Canada in support of Once More ‘Round the Sun. The band has also been quite involved with HBO’s Game of Thrones, both recording a track called “White Walker” for the Vol. 2 mixtape and making cameo as a group of wildlings in the season 5 episode “Hardhome.” On another front, the band’s lead vocalist Brent Hinds has formed supergroup with members of OFF! and Tool.
