Pavement announced that they are releasing a new compilation on August 11th, 2015, via Matador. This new compilation – The Secret History Vol. 1 – brings together 30 tracks of the band’s rare songs.
The 30 songs on this release are made up by a series of b-sides, unreleased session tracks, John Peel sessions, and a 1992 live concert from the Slanted and Enchanted era (1990-1992), when Mark Ibold and Bob Nastanovich were still in the fold. And, this collection is also unique because 25 of the songs have never been previously released on vinyl.
The Secret History Vol. 1 will be released as a deluxe double album, and in addition to the music, this release contains essays by Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs. And, there will also be essays appearing from Matador Records, Billions Corporation, and Drag City bosses. This album will be packaged in a gorgeous gatefold designed by Rob Carmichael, who is known for his work with artists like Animal Collective and the Dirty Projectors.
Prior to this collection, Pavement made “five proper album-as-albums” – as they are called in a press release – which are Slanted and Enchanted in 1992, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain in 1994, Wowee Zowee in 1995, 1997’s Brighten The Corners, and Terror Twilight that was released in 1999.
