Canadian born singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco released the video for his new mini-LP title track “Another One” earlier today after releasing the first single, “The Way You’d Love Her” last month.
The video opens on DeMarco adorning a Michael Jackson mask and dancing on rocks with the ocean in the background. Most of the time throughout the video DeMarco is wearing a shirt with Michael Jackson drawn on the front, giving an unspoken shout out to one of DeMarco’s musical heroes. At the end, the camera even zooms in on the shirt. It reads, “In memory of Michael Jackson, king of pop.”
Other than that, the video doesn’t have much context. There are various film clips of DeMarco playing instruments and singing. To match the relaxed vibe of the song as well as the video, the clips look as if they were filmed in the early 90’s, with a slight film grain, blurry and too bright aspect to them. DeMarco himself looks as if he’d fit in with a group of 90’s California skateboarders, if you ask me.
Did I mention most of the clips are either in or in front of the ocean? Yeah, it’s pretty much as rad as California in the late 80’s/early 90’s would be.
The biggest surprise during the video is the Michael Jackson mask making a comeback later on in the video. I know it’s supposed to be a tribute to the late and great, but it ultimately comes off as a bit creepy so heads up.
Along with the release of the single and video, DeMarco has announced a contest to go along with it. DeMarco posted another video today teaching the piano bits of “Another One.” In return, he wants fans to make their own video playing the song and to send them in. The winner, the person DeMarco deems the most creative in playing the track, will win a whopping 69 cents via Paypal. So, no rush with the videos there guys.
The mini-LP Another One, recorded in an apartment in Queens, is the follow up to last year’s successful album Salad Days. A catalogue of bittersweet love songs, Another One and its eight tracks are set to be released August 7.
